Free Speech AND Freedom of Religion Trampled

A Christian couple in Oregon, Aaron and Melissa Klein, owned a bakery named 'Sweet Cakes by Melissa'.

The key word in that sentence is ‘owned’ – past tense.

Their religious beliefs led them to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer.

Instead of accepting the fact that the Kleins were willing to forego some income, being tolerant of their religious beliefs and going elsewhere for their celebratory cake, the Bowman-Cryers sued the Kleins for discrimination.

Boom!  There went freedom of religion as the Kleins lost their business.

To rub salt in the Kleins’ wounds, the Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian ordered the Kleins to stop talking about the case.

Boom!  There went freedom of speech as the Kleins are forbidden from defending themselves in public!

Avakian wrote this about the case:  “This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage.  It is about a business’s refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.”

Mr. Avakian is dead wrong.  This a case of the desecration of the American Constitution.
